Stomping Ground Staff Writers

Staff writers produce monthly articles to be featured on Stomping Ground in the following categories: On the Shelf (fiction, nonfiction, or poetry book reviews), Happenings (event roundups and narrative-style features on events attended), Atmosphere (interviews with and/or features of visual artists’ work, Q&As or profile features with arts activists/writers/other narrative artists of note), and Between the Quotes (personal essays related to process and/or writer’s life, features on topical subjects through the lens of literature/writing process, columns or “service piece” articles on topics of value to our readers, i.e.: “How to Publish Your Writing” or “When First Person POV is Most Effective”). They regularly pitch new article ideas, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively with the Managing Editor and Editor-in-Chief. Staff Writers work collaboratively and professionally with Staff Copy Editors to edit and refine articles for publication.

Responsibilities:

  • Pitch, research, and write monthly articles for publication on Stomping Ground

  • Contribute to the collective pitch sheet

  • Work collaboratively with staff copy editors to ensure article quality

  • Participate in and assist with other Habitat initiatives as needed (including opportunities to feature creative work on our podcast, promoting Habitat content across social media, etc.)

Opportunities for Growth:

Due to Habitat's commitment to allowing potential contributors to submit their work for free and to providing our annual and monthly publications to readers at no cost, we are currently unable to pay staff writers. However, we still value your hard work and strive to create a positive work environment with growth opportunities.

  • This is a chance to develop experience as a staff writer for a monthly publication and build a portfolio of clips that will be useful in future job or internship applications, as well as a chance to build and hone your voice and gain experience working with copy editors.

  • Collaborative and supportive team environment where creative contribution and initiative are rewarded. Habitat is a community and we support our staff even beyond the bounds of their time working with us; this is an excellent opportunity to develop your professional network and gain a personalized and, if merited, glowing professional reference.

Key Competencies:

  • Ability to pitch and write content of quality on deadline

  • Ability to work collaboratively as well as to independently set and meet deadlines

  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff copy editors regarding edits, respond to Habitat communications in a timely manner, and self-motivation to pitch and write articles of quality

  • Experience writing content for digital platforms prefered

  • Knowledge of SEO and AP Style practices a plus, but not required

To apply, please send your resume, cover letter, and a relevant writing sample, along with three pitches for Stomping Ground articles to habitatlitmag@gmail.com.
